iPhone SOS Or SOS Only In The Status Bar: How to Fix It

Quick answer
Your own carrier is unreachable but emergency calls still work. SOS is not the same as No Service, and the difference matters. Apple documents it precisely: your device is not connected to your cellular network, but you can still make emergency calls through other carriers' networks. The feature exists in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?
SOS is not the same as No Service, and the difference matters. Apple documents it precisely: your device is not connected to your cellular network, but you can still make emergency calls through other carriers' networks. The feature exists in the United States, Canada and Australia.
In practical terms your iPhone can see somebody's radio signal — it just is not one your account is allowed to use for normal traffic. That points at your line rather than at coverage. A suspended account, a failed eSIM provision, a line the carrier has not finished activating, or a roaming agreement your plan does not include will all produce SOS while a competitor's tower sits within range.
Because emergency calling still works, this is never an emergency-services problem. It is a provisioning or registration problem, and it usually needs the carrier once a restart has failed.
What should I try, in order?
- Toggle Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds and back off, then restart the iPhone. This resolves the cases caused by a stuck registration.
- Open Settings, Cellular and confirm your line is listed and turned on. A line that vanished from this screen has been removed or has failed to install.
- Check Settings, General, About for a pending carrier settings update, then install any iOS update.
- Move location if you can. Persistent SOS in one building but full service outside is a coverage problem, not an account problem — turn on Wi-Fi Calling instead.
- If SOS follows you everywhere, contact the carrier and ask specifically whether the line is active, provisioned to this IMEI, and not suspended for non-payment or fraud review. Only they can see this.
Which carriers does this apply to?
| Published for | any iPhone, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and UScellular |

| Type | iOS setting |
| Good to know | SOS and SOS only are US, Canadian and Australian status-bar states. Emergency calls work throughout, on any reachable network. |
