Why your 5G connection can genuinely be the slower one. This page explains what it does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

This is usually real, not imagined, and it comes down to how much spectrum the connection actually gets. Low-band 5G runs in narrow channels on 600 and 850 MHz โ€” the same airwaves that used to carry LTE โ€” and a narrow channel simply cannot carry much data no matter how modern the radio is. Mid-band 5G (T-Mobile's 2.5 GHz, and the C-band both Verizon and AT&T deployed) is where the large speed increases live.

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing makes it worse in some places. DSS lets a carrier run 5G and LTE inside the same carrier at the same time, which is how a 5G icon appeared nationwide so quickly, but the two technologies then share one block of spectrum and the 5G side gets only a slice of it.

Meanwhile mature LTE aggregates several carriers at once. An LTE connection combining three or four carriers can easily beat a single narrow low-band 5G channel. Forcing LTE is therefore a legitimate fix rather than a downgrade.

What should I try, in order?

  1. Run a speed test on 5G, then set Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data Options, Voice & Data to LTE and run the same test in the same spot.
  2. If LTE wins, leave it on LTE in that location. You are on a narrow low-band or DSS 5G carrier and LTE genuinely carries more data there.
  3. Check the indicator: 5G UW (Verizon), 5G UC (T-Mobile) or 5G+ (AT&T) means the faster mid-band or mmWave layer. A plain 5G icon usually means low-band.
  4. Set it back to 5G Auto when you leave. 5G Auto uses Smart Data mode, which drops to LTE when 5G would not be meaningfully faster and saves battery doing it.
  5. If plain 5G is consistently slower than LTE across your whole area, report it to your carrier with the speed-test figures. Only they can rebalance the spectrum split.
