Why does this happen and how do I fix it?
iPhone has several microphones. The one at the bottom carries your voice on a normal handset call; the ones near the top and rear are used on speakerphone and for video. Testing them separately tells you whether the hardware is at fault or whether the call audio is being lost in the network.
The most common cause is not a fault at all — a case, a screen protector or pocket lint covering a microphone port. The second most common is a specific app being denied microphone permission, which produces silence in that app while calls are fine.
If both the recording tests come back clear and people still cannot hear you on calls, the microphone is working and the problem lies with the voice path: the call leg, the codec, or a weak uplink.
What should I try, in order?
- Remove the case and any screen protector or film, and clear debris from the openings. This is Apple's first step and it fixes a large share of cases.
- Test the call microphone: open Voice Memos, record while speaking at the bottom of the phone, and play it back. Your voice should be clear.
- Test the speakerphone microphones: open Camera, record a video while speaking at the top of the phone, switch to the other camera and record again. Play both back.
- If only one app is affected, check Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone and confirm that app is enabled.
- If the recordings are clear but callers still cannot hear you, the microphone is fine — turn on Wi-Fi Calling and test again, since a weak uplink degrades your outgoing audio first.
- If a recording is silent or muffled, the microphone needs service. Book an appointment rather than resetting settings.
