iPhone Battery Drains Fast In Poor Signal: How to Fix It

Quick answer
Why one bar of signal empties the battery so quickly. The transmitter adjusts its output to whatever it takes to reach the tower. The underlying behaviour is defined by the cellular standards and applies to every phone, not just iPhone. Nothing in iOS overrides it.

Why one bar of signal empties the battery so quickly. This page explains what it does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?
The transmitter adjusts its output to whatever it takes to reach the tower. The network estimates the path loss from your phone's own signal measurements and commands the power upward as that loss grows, until it clips at the ceiling — 23 dBm, roughly 200 milliwatts radiated, which is the default power class for essentially every band in use.
The cellular standards put numbers on what that costs. In 3GPP's agreed power model an uplink slot sent at full 23 dBm draws about 2.8 times what the same slot draws at 0 dBm, and around 700 times what the phone uses in deep sleep. Weak signal also forces a slower, more robust modulation and provokes retransmissions — and those retransmissions matter mostly because they keep the modem awake instead of letting it sleep between them. Losing the sleep costs more than the extra transmit power does.
Worst of all is no service at all. With no network to camp on, the phone repeatedly scans every band it supports across every radio technology, looking for one. Apple's own battery guidance reaches the same conclusion for both cases, recommending Airplane Mode for no coverage and for low signal alike.
What should I try, in order?
- Connect to Wi-Fi and turn on Wi-Fi Calling under Settings, Cellular, your line, Wi-Fi Calling. The cellular transmitter can then drop to idle.
- In a known dead zone, turn on Airplane Mode. This stops the endless band scan, which is the worst case of all — worse than one bar. Apple recommends exactly this for no coverage and for low signal.
- Try LTE instead of 5G under Cellular Data Options, Voice & Data. On a marginal 5G cell the phone can be maintaining two radio links at once.
- Turn on Low Power Mode to cut background transfers, so less data has to be pushed through the expensive link.
- Check Settings, Battery for an app doing heavy background transfer — a large upload over a weak link is a common hidden cause.
- If the drain persists in strong signal too, check Battery Health rather than the network.
