What is Verizon Number Lock?
Number Lock is free and prevents Verizon from processing any port-out request for a locked line. Verizon's own account security guidance is blunt about why it matters: criminals port a number out to intercept the calls and texts that banks and exchanges use for authentication codes, and victims often find out only when their phone stops working.
Only an Account Owner or Account Manager can turn it on or off. A locked line cannot generate a Number Transfer PIN at all, so the lock has to come off before any legitimate switch. Postpaid lines unlock instantly; prepaid lines have a 15-minute wait after unlocking before a transfer PIN can be created.
Verizon texts you whenever the setting changes, which is itself useful — an unexpected notification is an early warning that someone else is in your account.
Important: Turn Number Lock off before you switch carriers, or the port will fail and your new carrier will not be able to tell you why.
How do I do it?
- Open the My Verizon app and sign in as the Account Owner or a Manager.
- Tap the Account tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Edit Profile and Settings under your name.
- Scroll to the Security menu and tap Number Lock.
- Toggle each number you want locked, then save the change.
