What is Hold Assist?
When a call puts you on hold, tap the More button and then Hold Assist. Your iPhone stays on the line and you can put it down. When it detects a live agent, it alerts you to rejoin and shows a transcript of whatever was said while you were away.
The transcription is done on device, is discarded when you reconnect, and the call itself is not recorded. Apple also has the Phone app listen for hold music automatically, which is controlled by a switch called Hold Assist Detection in Settings, Apps, Phone. It is on by default.
One practical trap: if your iPhone is on silent or in a Focus, you will not hear the alert when the agent arrives and the call can be dropped. Check your ringer before you walk away.
How do I do it?
- While a call has you on hold, tap the More button.
- Tap Hold Assist, then make sure your ringer is on before stepping away.
- Tap the alert to rejoin when an agent becomes available.
- To control automatic detection, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Phone, then turn Hold Assist Detection on or off.
