iPhone eSIM Activation Failed: How to Fix It
By Muhammad Shahid · · 5 min read
Quick answer
The eSIM will not install or the line never activates. An eSIM install is a download. Your iPhone contacts the carrier's provisioning server, pulls a profile and installs it, so anything that interrupts that path — no internet, a captive portal, a VPN, or a server-side problem — produces a failure that looks like a device fault but is not.

The eSIM will not install or the line never activates. This page explains what it does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?
An eSIM install is a download. Your iPhone contacts the carrier's provisioning server, pulls a profile and installs it, so anything that interrupts that path — no internet, a captive portal, a VPN, or a server-side problem — produces a failure that looks like a device fault but is not.
Apple's own checks are account-level first: the plan must be eligible for eSIM, an enterprise or corporate plan may not support it, the carrier must cover your area with no outage, and the plan must have no billing block. Only after those does device troubleshooting make sense.
One hard constraint catches people out: for two lines from different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked. Two plans from the same carrier work on a locked device, but a second carrier will not.
Important: Do not delete a partially installed eSIM before speaking to the carrier. Deleting the profile can consume the activation and leave you with no line and no working code.
What should I try, in order?
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network with no captive portal, and turn off any VPN. The install needs an unobstructed path to the carrier server.
- Restart the iPhone and try the activation again. A surprising share of failures clear here.
- Confirm eligibility: your plan supports eSIM, there is no billing block, and for two different carriers your iPhone is unlocked. Check Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock — it should read No SIM restrictions.
- Check for a carrier settings update under Settings, General, About, and install any pending iOS update.
- If you are transferring from another iPhone, use eSIM Quick Transfer under Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM rather than a fresh activation code.
- If it still fails, ask the carrier to reissue the activation and confirm the eSIM is assigned to your EID — find it with *#06# or in Settings, General, About.
Which carriers does this apply to?

| Good to know | An eSIM QR code or activation link can normally only be used once. If installation fails partway, the carrier usually has to issue a new one. |
