iPhone Visual Voicemail Stuck Loading: How to Fix It

The voicemail tab spins but never lists your messages. This page explains what it does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

Visual Voicemail is not stored on your iPhone. The message list and the audio are fetched from the carrier's voicemail platform over your data connection, which is why the tab can spin forever while calls and texts are perfectly fine — it is a data and provisioning problem, not a voicemail problem.

Three things break it in practice. Cellular data being unavailable or restricted for the voicemail service; the Visual Voicemail feature not being provisioned on the line, which happens after a SIM swap, a plan change or a port; and a stale carrier settings bundle.

Apple is explicit that Voicemail, Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail are available only from select carriers in select regions. On a line where the carrier has not enabled it, the tab will never populate and no amount of resetting will change that.

What should I try, in order?

1. Confirm cellular data works. Visual Voicemail downloads over the data connection and often will not sync over Wi-Fi alone.
2. Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and open the Voicemail tab on cellular. Some carrier voicemail platforms are only reachable over the cellular bearer.
3. Toggle Airplane Mode for 15 seconds, then restart the iPhone.
4. Check Settings, General, About for a pending carrier settings update. A stale bundle after a port or SIM swap is a very common cause.
5. As a fallback, call the mailbox directly by holding 1 or dialling *86 so you can at least hear the messages while you sort it out.
6. If it still will not load, ask the carrier to confirm Visual Voicemail is provisioned on the line and to reset the mailbox. This one genuinely usually needs them.
