iPhone Wi-Fi Calling Will Not Turn On: How to Fix It

Quick answer
The switch refuses to stay on, or calls still fail over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature that has to be provisioned on your line before iOS will let you enable it. If the switch is missing altogether, the feature is not on your plan and nothing on the device will add it.

Why does this happen and how do I fix it?
Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature that has to be provisioned on your line before iOS will let you enable it. If the switch is missing altogether, the feature is not on your plan and nothing on the device will add it.
When the switch is present but will not stay on, the usual blocker is the emergency address. Enabling it requires a registered address because a Wi-Fi call carries no cell-site location for emergency services to work from, and the switch will not commit until an address is accepted.
When it enables but calls still fail, the network is generally at fault rather than the phone. Wi-Fi Calling needs outbound access on the ports the carrier's IMS gateway uses, which restrictive guest networks, corporate firewalls and some VPNs block.
Important: Keep the registered emergency address current. If cellular is unavailable, an emergency call may go over Wi-Fi and responders will be sent to the address on file.
What should I try, in order?
- Open Settings, Cellular, tap the line you want, then tap Wi-Fi Calling and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. On a dual-SIM iPhone this is set per line.
- Enter or confirm the emergency address when prompted. The switch will not stay on until an address is accepted.
- If the switch is missing entirely, the feature is not provisioned on your plan โ ask the carrier to add it.
- Turn off any VPN and try a different Wi-Fi network. Guest, hotel and corporate networks commonly block the traffic Wi-Fi Calling needs.
- Check Settings, General, About for a carrier settings update, then restart the iPhone.
- Confirm it is active by opening Control Center and looking for Wi-Fi in the status bar area while a call is possible.

| Good to know | All four major US carriers support Wi-Fi Calling, but it must be enabled per line and is not on every plan, particularly some prepaid and business plans. |
