Beyond the usual 5G Auto, 5G On and LTE choices, Apple documents two further options that may appear under Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data Options: 5G Standalone and Voice Over 5G Standalone. Standalone means the 5G network runs on its own core rather than leaning on LTE, which mainly affects latency and how voice calls are carried.
Apple is explicit that these settings only show up in some markets and directs you to your network provider for detail. If you do not see them, your carrier has not enabled the feature for your plan or your area, and there is nothing to turn on.
One knock-on worth knowing: on iPhone 12 models, turning on Low Power Mode disables 5G Standalone where it is available.
How do I do it?
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Cellular, then tap Cellular Data Options. On dual SIM, pick the line first.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- If 5G Standalone or Voice Over 5G Standalone are listed, set them as your carrier advises.
