Turn Off Email-To-Text On Verizon on iPhone: How It Works
By Muhammad Shahid ยท ยท 4 min read
Quick answer
Text off to 4040 to close a common spam route. Verizon lets messages sent to an email-style address reach your phone as a text. Spammers exploit this, because it lets them reach a number without a phone line of their own โ which is why the offending messages often show an email address rather than a number.

What is Turn Off Email-To-Text On Verizon?
Verizon lets messages sent to an email-style address reach your phone as a text. Spammers exploit this, because it lets them reach a number without a phone line of their own โ which is why the offending messages often show an email address rather than a number.
Verizon's answer, published in its suspicious text messages guidance, is to text the word off to 4040 to disable email-to-text on your line. That is a text you send, not a number you dial.
Turn it off only if you know nothing legitimate uses it. Some alerting systems, ticketing platforms and older business tools deliver notifications this way, and disabling it will silence those too.
Important: Check first that no service you rely on sends you alerts by email-to-text, because those will stop arriving too.
How do I do it?
- Confirm nothing you rely on sends alerts to your number as an email.
- Open Messages and start a new message to 4040.
