Activation Lock on iPhone: How It Works
By Muhammad Shahid ยท ยท 4 min read
Quick answer
Why a stolen iPhone is worth far less than a stolen Android. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My. Apple stores your Apple Account on its activation servers and ties it to the device, so your Apple Account password is required before anyone can turn Find My off, erase the device, or reactivate and use it.

What is Activation Lock?
Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My. Apple stores your Apple Account on its activation servers and ties it to the device, so your Apple Account password is required before anyone can turn Find My off, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. Every time an iPhone is activated or recovered it checks in with Apple to see whether the lock is set.
The practical effect is that a thief ends up with a device that cannot be set up. On iOS 15 or later a locked device shows an iPhone Locked to Owner screen on wake. Activation Lock can also cover individual parts: a component transplanted from a locked device is not eligible for service under Apple warranty or AppleCare.
The same mechanism is why buying second-hand needs care. If you see the Locked to Owner screen, or setup asks for someone else's Apple Account, do not take ownership until the previous owner removes the device from their account.
Important: If you lose access to your Apple Account and cannot reset the password, you may be unable to use or reactivate your own iPhone. Keep your recovery details current.
How do I do it?
- Go to Settings, tap your name, then Find My.
- Confirm Find My iPhone is on โ Activation Lock follows automatically.
- Review your Apple Account recovery email, phone number and any Recovery Contacts.
- Before buying used, check the device shows the Hello screen and not Locked to Owner.
- Before selling, erase the device properly so Activation Lock is released.
