What is Report An Unwanted Call To The FTC?
The FTC splits reporting in two. If you simply want to report an unwanted or illegal call and did not lose money, use the streamlined form at DoNotCall.gov. If money was lost, or you know something about the company behind it, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov instead.
Include your own number, the number shown on your caller ID even if you think it is spoofed, any number you were told to call back, and the date and time. The FTC says spoofed numbers are still worth reporting because it analyses patterns across reports, and the callback number is often the thread that leads somewhere.
You will not get a personal reply — the FTC receives millions of reports a year. What it does do is release the reported numbers to carriers and call-blocking partners every business day, which is how a report you file turns into a blocked call for someone else.
How do I do it?
- Note the caller ID number, the date and time, and any callback number you were given.
- Go to DoNotCall.gov and open the report an unwanted call form.
- Enter your own number as the number that received the call.
- Submit the caller ID number even if you suspect it is spoofed.
- If you lost money, use ReportFraud.ftc.gov instead.
