What does *33*0000# do?
Service code 33 is BAOC, Barring of All Outgoing Calls, defined in 3GPP TS 22.088 and given its MMI form in TS 22.030 Annex B. Once the network accepts it, every outbound call except emergency numbers is refused at the switch. It survives a reboot, a SIM swap into another handset, and airplane mode, because the setting lives in the carrier network and not on the iPhone.
The 0000 in the template is not part of the code. It stands for your call barring password, a four digit code that is separate from your SIM PIN, your voicemail PIN and your account PIN. Carriers that provision barring typically ship it as 0000 or 1234, but many set something else. Replace those four digits with your own before dialling.
The spec also allows a basic service group after the password, so *33*0000*11# would bar outgoing telephony only and leave data services alone. That refinement is only meaningful on a line where plain barring already works.
Important: If this does succeed you will not be able to place calls until you deactivate it with #33*password#, and the block follows your line rather than your phone. Do not experiment with it on a number you depend on.

Which carriers does this apply to?

| Type | Support varies |
| Good to know | Rarely provisioned on US consumer lines. On most AT&T and T-Mobile accounts this returns an error because the subscription never included call barring, which is the expected result rather than a fault. |
