Recipients see a stranger's name, or just Wireless Caller. This page explains what it does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

I build **Secret Codes: IMEI & Carrier**, a free iPhone app with 317 checked codes and guides, including this one. If you would rather tap than memorise, [get Secret Codes on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/secret-codes-imei-carrier/id6807154322).

## Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

Your iPhone does not send your name. On the US phone network the outgoing call carries your number only, and it is the recipient's carrier that looks the name up — a CNAM dip against a calling-name database, keyed on your number, for which that carrier pays a fraction of a cent. Whatever the database returns is what appears on their screen, and the field is capped at about 15 characters.

There is no single database. Carriers subscribe to competing ones and updates propagate between them inconsistently, which is exactly why the same number can show correctly to one person and as Wireless Caller to another. A recycled number keeps its previous owner's record until that record is corrected, and where the lookup finds nothing useful the carrier falls back to a generic label or your rate centre's city and state.

So there is no setting on your iPhone that changes this. Show My Caller ID suppresses your number; it cannot set a name. Contact Posters and name-and-photo sharing reach only people already in your Contacts, over Apple's own services. And a name the recipient has saved in their own Contacts always wins over anything the network supplies.

## What should I try, in order?

- Confirm what is actually shown by asking people on two different carriers. Different answers confirm this is their carriers' lookups, not your phone.
- Ask whether they have you saved in their own Contacts. A saved contact overrides the network name entirely, and only they can correct that.
- AT&T postpaid: in your account profile, open Settings, expand the line and tap Edit next to Caller ID. Allow up to 72 hours. On AT&T Prepaid the name is fixed at Wireless Caller and cannot be changed at all.
- T-Mobile: in the T Life app, open Manage, then Device Settings, and set the Caller ID name. T-Mobile submits it to its vendors by hand, so allow up to 72 hours.
- Verizon: Share Name ID can be edited in My Verizon or the Call Filter app, but Verizon states only Call Filter Plus and landline Caller ID customers will see it — so it usually will not fix a wrong name on another carrier's mobile. Ask Verizon to correct the underlying record instead. On UScellular there is no self-service; call customer service.
- Re-test after three days. If it is still wrong, go back to the carrier and ask them to confirm the record was actually submitted to the calling-name databases.

## Which carriers does this apply to?

| Published for | Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and UScellular |

| Type | iOS setting |

| Good to know | Entirely a carrier-side record. AT&T and T-Mobile offer real self-service; Verizon's Share Name ID reaches a much narrower audience; UScellular has no documented self-service at all. |
