The classic operator digit, and what it actually does on mobile. This page explains what `0` does, how to use it on an iPhone and which carriers it applies to.

I build **Secret Codes: IMEI & Carrier**, a free iPhone app with 317 checked codes and guides, including this one. If you would rather tap than memorise, [get Secret Codes on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/secret-codes-imei-carrier/id6807154322).

## What does 0 do?

On the old landline network, 0 reached a live operator who could place collect calls, person-to-person calls and third-party billed calls. That role has largely disappeared.

On a modern US mobile network, dialling 0 alone usually does one of three things: nothing at all, a recorded message, or a transfer into your own carrier's customer service menu. None of the four major carriers publishes 0 as a supported service, and operator-assisted calling has effectively been retired on wireless.

If you need help with a call, 611 reaches your carrier. If you need an emergency service, 911 is the number. Neither should be replaced by 0.

## How do I use 0?

- Open the Phone app and tap Keypad.
- Type 0 exactly as written.
- Press the green Call button and wait for the result.

## Which carriers does this apply to?

| Published for | Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and UScellular |

| Type | Support varies |

| Good to know | Included for completeness. Operator service is a legacy landline feature and is not documented as supported by any of the four major US wireless carriers. |

## How Secret Codes helps

Secret Codes keeps this and every other entry a search away. Pick your carrier once and each entry says whether it is published for your line. You can save favourites, add a private note, and record whether a code worked on your line. This entry is part of Secret Codes Pro.
